design-file

We don’t mean to toot our own horn – you see what we did there – but we’re really excited about this project we just completed. It’s a 44 foot long Polar Express train, designed, printed, cut and assembled entirely at Alexander’s.

Idea and design

It all started with a simple idea: keep kids entertained at a Christmas party by giving them something to take pictures with. From there it was up to our graphic designer to sketch and design an entire train from scratch. He worked his design magic and came up with a beautiful product in just a few days. With Adobe Illustrator to create shapes, different gradients, colors and hues he was able to give the train a life-like three-dimensional look and feel.

Printing and cutting

From there it went to our wide-format printers. Our team used a foam core substrate to give the train the strength it would need. After the design files our graphic designer and pre-press team created were sent to our printer it was only a matter of cutting and assembling each piece. Easel back stands were also cut out for each panel using the foam core, and were later glued to the back of the panels to allow them to stand up on their own.

Production

From there our production team assembled the panels together into the full train, which we set up in our facilities to check for quality control. At 44 feet long by nearly 7 feet tall, it was a pretty impressive sight. We were proud of our entire team that came together to make it reality.
