Lately we’ve been using more of our white ink printing capabilities on our HP Indigo press. We love to see the variety of printed pieces that use white ink, a relatively new digital printing technology.

Sometimes we have customers who come to us with a great design or well-thought-out plan for how they want to implement the uniqueness of white ink into their printing project. But other clients or customers are unaware of the distinct advantages white ink offers.

So with today’s post, we’d like to get your creative juices flowing by sharing 4 ways white ink printing can improve your print project.

1. White ink highlights the paper

Since white ink doesn’t show up on white paper particularly well (though you can still print white on white stock for extra texture), most white ink printing projects use some type of specialty stock. Everything from transparent overlays, to dark cover stock substrates work great with white ink printing, helping to show off the unique characteristics of the paper.

2. White ink adds texture to your print project

When we tell clients or customers about white ink, they’ll sometimes ask why we don’t just print dark on white paper and cutout the ink where we want white to remain. This approach works for certain projects, though you lose the texture and unique characteristics of your paper when you do that.

Perhaps one of the most sought-after qualities of white ink printing is the texture and visibility of the ink coming off the page. If you run your finger over white ink printed on a dark paper you can literally feel the texture of the ink laid over the paper. The white color doesn’t just seem to pop off the page; it really does stand-off, creating a unique visual printed piece.

3. White ink adds unique style to your design

Our two most popular white ink projects are business cards and wedding announcements/save-the-date cards. We’ve found that because both of these printed items are designed to highlight a person’s sense of branding and style, white ink becomes a great differentiator.

4. White ink is affordable

Before digital printing with white ink was created, if you wanted to print a light color or a white on a dark paper, you had to use screen printing techniques, which could get expensive and laborious. With the HP Indigo digital technology you still receive the same quality you’d get with an offset press or screen printing, but your printer can produce your piece in a fraction of the time at a fraction of the cost.
