When someone sits down at a restaurant, they aren’t just ordering a meal, they are ordering an experience. More often than not, that experience begins with the menu.
Make a great first impression by designing print menus that will fill your visitors with anticipation.
Use Color
There is a strong link between color and appetite. Shades of red or yellow are believed to induce cravings, but in the case of a menu, it’s more important to stick to your brand colors.
Typography
When describing the dishes in your menu, the way the words are written may give them new meaning.
In the example below, notice how “appetizers” is written with a sparse font? This plays off of the fact that appetizers are not meant to fill you up. “Soups, Salads + Stews” is a thin, curvy font; suggesting that they are meant for those watching their figure. “Navajo Tacos” is spelled out in a bold font; assuring that they will be hearty and filling.
The typography of your print menus can also be used to make the selections more memorable, or to increase the perceived value of the meal.
Shape and Texture
When a waiter hands a guest a flat sheet of paper as the menu, the guests expectations for the meal immediately start to sink. A thick menu, with full color photos of the dishes is more likely to increase their anticipation. Add a unique shape and texture to your print menus and you’ll really kick off the experience.
